How the Sega Master System version differs

The Master System port has cut-down music and a cut-down introduction, and it is one-player only.

It has a unique boss on Round 6, and only two enemy characters can appear on screen at once.

Before you buy

The European cart is the one to look for, and loose it is priced above the typical European-only game. A complete copy costs more than a loose one. A US console plays European carts, so a listing calling it an American copy deserves a second look. The manual is the part most often missing.

The Sega Genesis version

The Genesis original that started the brawler series, and a fairly priced US cart with a lot of staying power.

This is the Genesis / Mega Drive version of Streets of Rage, known in Japan as Bare Knuckle: Ikari no Tetsuken. Sega developed and published it. You pick one of three former police officers who take on a crime syndicate, either alone or with a friend, to a techno soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro. It came out in Japan in August 1991, in North America in 1991 and in Europe in September 1991.

Mean Machines said the Mega Drive needed a fabulous beat 'em up and that this one more than delivered, with excellent sprites and backdrops, brilliant music and simultaneous two-player action, and called it an essential buy. It topped the UK Mega Drive charts on release.

“The greatest and most enjoyable beat em up yet seen on the Megadrive!”

— Mean Machines, September 1991

“Watch those bad guys count the spinning stars as you dust them down with a flying kick after using your buddy as a human trampolene! Buy this and soak your pants - it’s that good!”

— Computer + Video Games, October 1991

“Streets of Rage will knock you out! If you enjoy games like Double Dragon or Final Fight, you must slug it out with Streets of Rage.”

— GamePro, October 1991

“Yes! The Megadrive needed a fabulous beat 'em up, and Streets of Rage more than delivers.”

— MegaTech, December 1991

Master System · Sega CD · Game Gear · Nintendo 3DS

  • Game Gear. The Game Gear version omits Adam, has five rounds, and offers two-player play via cable link.
  • Game Gear. Sega Force rated the Game Gear version 81%, saying it was not bad on handheld but let down by lack of variation.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the median. The European cart usually costs less than the US one, while the Japanese cart (Bare Knuckle) usually costs more and has a different cartridge shape. A Sega Classic budget re-release is also priced separately and usually costs less than the standard US cart. It is a cheap-tier game for counterfeit risk, so a normal condition check is enough. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
