Rare's ambitious, bloated arcade shooter-adventure, and a cheap cart for how much game it holds.

Jet Force Gemini is a third-person shooter from Rare, released in North America in October 1999, in PAL regions later that month and in Japan in December as Star Twins. You control three members of a galactic law enforcement team fighting a horde of drones led by an insectoid called Mizar, and saving the Tribals he has enslaved. It emphasizes shooting large numbers of enemies and has a multiplayer mode for two to four players. It takes inspiration from 1980s arcade games and from Super Metroid and Super Mario 64.

Edge called it a straightforward blaster at heart. IGN's Matt Casamassina thought it flawed but still one of the N64's most original games, and Next Generation's mixed review found it bloated with features and said it would have been twice as good with the tedious parts cut. GameFan's May 1999 preview was delighted by how the graphics pushed the hardware.

“But that's a fairly minor complaint when you've got a one-player game so superb. It's like stepping back to the days when games developers weren't prepared to sacrifice framerates for flashy special effects”

— N64 Magazine, November 1999

Before you buy

The US cartridge is cheap loose, below the library median. The fake risk is medium, so ask for a photo of the board, which is the reliable test; a cart that boots proves nothing. A Not for Resale demo cart sells for far more loose; no published way exists to spot a fake one, so buy it graded or with a board photo. PAL copies cost about half as much, and Japanese copies (Star Twins) cost less loose and about the same complete.
