One of the N64's better 3D platformers, praised by Next Generation and IGN, and priced above the library median.

Rayman 2: The Great Escape is Ubi Soft's 3D platformer, developed by Ubi Pictures, with Rayman rescuing friends from a robotic pirate crew. The N64 version reached PAL territories in late October 1999 and North America in November. It started out aimed at the PC and was moved to the N64 mid-development, which meant reducing texture quality.

The N64 version was widely praised. Next Generation's Jeff Lundrigan wrote that its character designs and polished gameplay gave it something to offer players of any age or skill, and IGN's Brandon Justice called it the most impressive feat of platforming game design and execution he had seen. GameFan's August 1999 preview loved the lush environments and varied gameplay, but flagged the camera as the main concern at that stage.

How it was made

Developed by Ubi Pictures and published by Ubi Soft.

What the press said at the time

“Rayman 2: The Great Escape is the greatest graphical achievement among 3D platformers on N64, and even more surprising, it plays better than the rest as well.”

— GameFan, November 1999

“Rayman 2 isn't as horrendously misguided as its stablemate Tonic Trouble (55% in N64/33), but it does mark yet another failed attempt to recreate that Mario magic.”

— N64 Magazine, December 1999

“There are very few N64 games which can hold a candle to Rayman 2's sheer graphical might”

— GameFan, August 1999

Before you buy

Low fake risk, and the US cart sits above the library median on loose price, with a complete copy costing several times more. PAL copies cost roughly half as much as US ones. Budget for a Controller Pak: the game manual says progress saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge. The Expansion Pak is optional; Nintendo listed the game among those it enhances.
