A cheap Genesis football game, with a pricier Championship Edition for collectors.

John Madden Football '93 was developed for the Genesis by Looking Glass Technology and published by Electronic Arts. It came out in North America in December 1992 and in Europe on 17 December 1992. It was the third Madden game on the Genesis. A writer for Mega Drive Advanced Gaming called the digitized speech the most obvious addition.

A separate John Madden Football '93: Championship Edition also exists for the Genesis, first as a rental-only game and later by mail order. It has its own price row and costs more.

“this latest installment is the worst of the bunch, thanks to some gameplay problems not present in the other two games.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Electronic Arts has done it again and made the best even better. John Madden Football “93 is even more fun to play than Madden ‘92.”

— GamePro, December 1992

“John Madden Football ‘93 is quite possibly the best sports game of all time. The Genesis version has smoother game play and the added bonus of the Madden sound samples, but both versions ooze with playability.”

— Video Games & Computer Entertainment, January 1993

“It has all those extra features, so if you really follow the sport closely you'll appreciate the additions. Most players won't spot the differences. Besides, this is slightly slower than '92.”

— MegaTech, May 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

A Mega Drive Advanced Gaming writer thought the most obvious addition was digitized speech, which the Super NES version did not have.

A Mega preview noted the Genesis game had a lot of added animation compared with its predecessors.

A special Genesis version, John Madden Football: Championship Edition, was released first as a rental-only game, then re-released through direct mail.

Before you buy

Among US carts the standard game sits well below the median, and the European cart usually costs even less. The Championship Edition sits well above the median, so check which version a listing is before comparing prices. Both are cheap-tier carts with no per-game fake concerns. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
