A solid early-90s Genesis football game that is cheap to own and carries real NFL player names.
Madden NFL '95 on the Genesis was developed by High Score Productions and published by EA Sports. It came out in North America on 18 November 1994 and in Europe the same month. It is the first Madden game with both NFL team logos and the NFLPA license, so players appear by name as well as number. Game Players noted that the Genesis version includes almost every player name on the team rosters, but lacks the hang-time meter on punts that the Super NES version has.
GamePro's reviewer noted that, unlike the Super NES game, Madden '95 on the Genesis does not always produce high-scoring games.
What the press said at the time
“Madden ‘95 has continued to improve on the old standard football cart.”
How the Sega Genesis version differs
The Genesis version is the first Madden game with both the NFL team logo and NFLPA licenses, so players are identified by names as well as numbers.
Game Players said the Genesis version lacks the hangtime meter on punts that the Super NES has, but includes almost every player name where the Super NES lists only numbers.
GamePro noted that, unlike its Super NES counterpart, the Genesis game does not always generate high-scoring games.

Super NES · Game Boy · Game Gear
- Super NES. Electronic Gaming Monthly's two sports reviewers scored the Super NES version 85% and 90%, citing improved animations and sounds plus new rules and plays.
- Game Boy. The Game Boy version was released without the NFL license as Madden '95; GamePro found it a surprisingly strong effort given tiny sprites and mediocre sound.
- Game Gear. GamePro called the Game Gear version the best football game available for it but not worth buying, because of tiny graphics and no multiplayer.
Before you buy
Among US carts it is below the middle, so it is cheap. The European cart usually costs more than the US one. The cartridge saves to a battery, so test that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair. Sega Retro lists it as working with EA's 4 Way Play and with XBAND. EA's 4 Way Play and Sega's first Team Player do not run each other's games; Sega's later Team Player (MK-1647) runs both in its EXTRA mode.
