A helicopter sequel to Desert Strike that was a best-seller on the Mega Drive for three months, and an inexpensive US cart.

Jungle Strike is the direct sequel to Desert Strike, a helicopter shoot 'em up that mixes action and strategy. The plot has two villains bent on destroying Washington, D.C. High Score Productions and Granite Bay Software developed it and Electronic Arts published it: Europe got it on 16 July 1993, North America in August 1993 and Japan on 17 December 1993 through Electronic Arts Victor. The Mega Drive version was a best-seller for three months.

Gamefan's review said fans of the original would find much to like and others might still give it a look, praising the sampled sounds, the tighter control and the better graphics. It called the result a great action simulation that makes a nice change from the typical shooter.

“The control method is great too. Using the momentum of the chopper, you're able to pull off some amazingly graceful combat manoeuvres.”

— Mean Machines Sega, May 1993

“Jungle Strike is as good a helicopter combat game as there is for any system. For Desert Strike vets this is a no-brainer.”

— GamePro, July 1993

“Jungle Strike is the best shoot-'em-up I've seen in a long time. The graphics are cool, sound is brilliant and gameplay, while quite difficult, is totally addictive.”

— Sega Force, July 1993

“Impressive graphics and tons of missions action. Even better than the first game.”

— MegaTech, August 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Jungle Strike began on the Genesis in 1993 as the sequel to Desert Strike, and was Electronic Arts' first 16-megabit cartridge.

  • Super NES. Game Players called the Super NES version a poor imitation of the Genesis game, advising readers who wanted the chopper action to consider a Genesis instead.
  • Amiga. Programmer Stuart Johnson said he tried to keep the Amiga conversion more faithful to the Mega Drive version than Desert Strike's had been, and to make it run more smoothly.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, while a complete European copy costs somewhat less. The Japanese cart usually costs several times as much loose and noticeably more complete, and has a different cartridge shape. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately from the plastic-case copy, and the complete box copy usually costs much less. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
