A Disney kart racer from Rare in the Diddy Kong Racing mold, pleasant but not a standout.

Mickey's Speedway USA is a kart racer developed by Rare and published by Nintendo. It reached North America in November 2000, Europe in December 2000 and Japan in January 2001. Mickey, Donald, Goofy and friends race across American landscapes, and GameFan's August 2000 preview counted at least twenty races, including Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon.

The N64 game plays much like Rare's earlier Diddy Kong Racing. It adds a practice mode and a four-arena battle mode, lets you unlock Dewey, Louie and Von Drake through Grand Prix mode, and hides four special vehicle parts around the tracks, all of which must be found to open the final Grand Prix. Reviews were mixed. A separate Game Boy Color version exists.

“Mickey's Speedway, by contrast, does without innovations or outstanding strengths — but it's still a fast, frenetic, challenging and often thrilling racer.”

— N64 Magazine, January 2001

“The friendly character voices are comfortingly recognizable, but their repetitious garble will pain your ears at every turn. Even the music is nauseatingly annoying. On the plus side, the graphics are on par with those from the best N64 games, though Mickey may look bare in a few parts.”

— GamePro, February 2001

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

A fourth unlockable racer, Huey, can only be added to the N64 game by connecting the Game Boy Color version through the Transfer Pak.

Before you buy

The US cartridge sits about at the library median when loose, and the fake risk is low. PAL copies cost somewhat more than US ones and PAL complete copies cost much more, while Japanese copies cost less. The manual says the Rumble Pak is supported but optional.
