An arcade racer that gave an all-Beetle roster real tracks to explore, and one of the better N64 racers to pick up.

This is the Nintendo 64 racer in which every vehicle is a Volkswagen New Beetle. EA Canada and Paradigm Entertainment began their partnership on an entry in the Need for Speed series. You race on unlocked tracks, hunt for crates to smash and collect colored ladybugs, and a single-player championship has three circuits plus a secret bonus circuit. In Australia it was released as HSV Adventure Racing, with Holden Special Vehicles models in place of the Beetles.

Critics praised its graphics, level design, car models, multiplayer mode and scenery, and faulted the small selection of tracks and cars. Its senior producer, Hanno Lemke, later said sales were small next to other EA products and blamed the box art and almost no marketing, along with heavy competition from other N64 racers.

The North American cartridge arrived in March 1999, the PAL release in September 1999 and the Japanese release, published through Square EA, in November 1999.

“Beetle Adventure Racing is a great looking N64 game and the tracks are easily the longest I've seen in any racer. If you can get over having to control such lame looking cars then you definitely should check this one out.”

— GameFan, April 1999

“While the 1-player adventure is fun, the only multiplayer gaming that is any good is the Beetle Battle, as the 2-player split-screen is somewhat boring. Beetle Adventure is one of the better racing options on the N64, definitely worth a rental.”

— Game Informer, April 1999

“Holy cow, this is good! BAR's gameplay is outstanding. It's highly competitive and very playable, with the best track designs l've seen on an N64 racer.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, April 1999

“As far as N64 racing goes, Beetle Adventure Racing fights its way to the head of the pack—the joy of exploring all its cool tracks will make you feel like a kid in a candy store. This one’s well worth buying.”

— GamePro, May 1999

Before you buy

The North American cart sits above the library median loose, and sealed copies cost many times the loose price. PAL copies cost clearly less than the North American cart, while Japanese copies cost much more. Because the Australian release is HSV Adventure Racing with different cars, check which version a PAL listing actually is if you want Beetles. Fake risk is low, so the usual photo check of the cartridge is enough.
