Coleco's 2600 take on Exidy's cat-and-mouse maze game, cheap and fine for a quick play.

Mouse Trap began as Exidy's 1981 arcade maze game, a Pac-Man variation with a mouse eating cheese, cats in place of ghosts, and bones that briefly turn the mouse into a dog. Color-coded doors in the maze open and close at the press of a button. Coleco ported it to the ColecoVision first, then to the Intellivision and the Atari 2600.

The 2600 cartridge was developed by JWDA, with Sylvia Day credited as designer, and came out in October 1982. It is a modest conversion that collectors mostly pick up to fill the Coleco shelf.

How it was made

Developed for the 2600 by JWDA, with Sylvia Day credited as designer. Released in North America in October 1982, with a PAL release in the third quarter of 1983.

How the Atari 2600 version differs

Coleco simplified the 2600 version: the hawk, the "IN" teleport box and the bonus prizes are gone, there are three cats instead of six, and all the doors move at once.

With only one joystick button, a quick tap or a long press either switches the doors or uses a stored bone, and scoring is much lower: cheese is worth 1 point instead of 10.

The 2600 maze is squatter, with brighter walls, and its doors form a single flickering color set.

  • ColecoVision. The ColecoVision launch version has 15 prizes instead of 32, an option to leave out the hawk, and different sound effects.
  • Intellivision. The Intellivision version adds an audio warning before a cat enters the maze and uses a different scoring scale.

Before you buy

Low risk, with no documented reproductions. Two listings are priced: the standard entry and a separate Coleco variant, which costs a little more. Check the label in the photos so you know which one you are paying for. The library lists both Coleco and Atari Corp. as publishers; if your copy is a late Atari Corp. cart in a plain shell with no dust door, that is normal and not a sign of a fake.
