A fast, good-looking Compile shooter whose high price makes it a cart well worth inspecting before you pay.

MUSHA is a vertically scrolling shooter from Compile, part of its Aleste series, in which a flying mecha pilot must destroy a huge, super-intelligent computer that threatens Earth. It came out in Japan on 21 December 1990 as Musha Aleste and in North America in February 1991, where Seismic Software published it. The game began as a prototype called Aleste 2 and was reworked toward a Japanese setting with a speed metal soundtrack, and its valley stage uses the Genesis's vertical parallax scrolling.

Reception at the time was mixed. Sega Force, covering the Mega Drive game, found it too short and easy to finish in a day. Gamefan was warmer, and in 1993 called it a great shooter for its time, with multi-layered scrolling, well-animated enemies and a very good soundtrack.

“What sets M.U.S.H.A. far above most of its competition is the excellent graphics. Every level of the game features splendid artwork and animation.”

— Video Games & Computer Entertainment, March 1991

“You've got endless continues, and you'll need them! MUSHA just might turn your brain into mush!”

— GamePro, March 1991

“Uneven graphics and the easy difficulty level make this a rather dull up-the-screen shoot 'em up which we can only recommend to novices.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“This is one fun vertically scrolling shoot-’em-up. Detailed graphics, but like similar games, it may prove just too easy for most MD players.”

— Sega Pro, June 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Sega Force found the Genesis shooter too short and easy; a reviewer finished it in a day and the magazine scored it 70%.

Before you buy

This is one of the priciest US carts, and the risk tier is High. A repro of it was sold as an original in the United States in 2023: it had a flash chip from the 2000s, no Sega ROM number, a board matching AliExpress repros and a shell stamped with patent numbers from later releases, and repros have been sold since at least 2014. Ask for a clear photo of the board, and be suspicious of a shell that does not match its era. The Japanese cart (Musha Aleste) usually costs far less than the US one, though its cartridge has a different shape and fits a Western console only with an adapter or after removing two plastic tabs in its slot.
