Treasure's brutal, relentless run-and-gun, made for hardcore Mega Drive players.

Alien Soldier is a run-and-gun game developed by Treasure and published by Sega, released in Japan on 24 February 1995 and in Europe on 26 May 1995. Many of its ideas come from Gunstar Heroes. Treasure designed it and its scoring explicitly for hardcore Mega Drive players, and Suganami, its programmer, wanted to see whether he could build the game himself, working through the New Year holidays as the Mega Drive market shrank.

It reached North America only through the Sega Channel download service and was not released on a US cartridge (Sega Retro), so the carts to look for are the European and Japanese ones.

What the press said at the time

“Our reaction is a bit mixed to say the least. For starters, let’s say that Treasure have continued their reputation for technical excellence with Alien Soldier, producing an excellent array of sprites, backdrops, special effects and bosses.”

— Sega Magazine, June 1995

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Retail copies were sold in Japan and PAL territories, while North America got the game only through the Sega Channel cable service.

Also on other platforms

  • PlayStation 2. The first re-release was on the PlayStation 2 in Japan in the Sega Ages 2500 series, which includes different regional releases and extra features.

Before you buy

The European cartridge is the one to start with; the Japanese cart usually costs noticeably more and has a different shape, which means it needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot. Any US-style cartridge of this game is a modern reproduction or homebrew cart. It ranks above the middle of the group of games with no US cartridge, so for a copy at this price ask for a photo of the board and compare it with the board listed on this page.
