About My Hero

My Hero (Seishun Scandal in Japan) is a Sega video game released via arcade in 1985 and was later ported to the Sega Master System in 1986. The gameplay takes the form of a simple side-scrolling beat 'em up fighting game, which was seen as being frustratingly difficult at several points in the game.

My Hero on Wikipedia

My Hero, known as Seishun Scandal in Japan, is a 1985 beat 'em up video game developed by Coreland and published by Sega for arcades. The gameplay format is similar to Irem's Kung-Fu Master (1984). In contrast to earlier martial arts games, My Hero departs from a more traditional martial arts setting, instead taking place in a contemporary urban city environment with street gangs, like later beat 'em ups such as Renegade (1986) and Double Dragon (1987). My Hero was later ported to the Master System in 1986.

A stripped-down card-based port of an arcade street brawler, interesting mostly as an early Master System curiosity.

My Hero began as a 1985 Sega arcade beat-em-up, made by Coreland, with a street-gang setting in the style of later brawlers. The Master System port was released in Japan on 31 January 1986 as Seishun Scandal, in North America in September 1986 and in Europe in August 1987.

Because of space limits on the Sega Card, the port has only the street gang in three stages that loop until you lose all your lives.

What the press said at the time

“This game looks dreadful. Iťs a really but you’ll be glad to hear that iťs packed with playability and fun.”

How the Sega Master System version differs

Space limits on the Sega Card meant the port keeps only the street-gang setting, in three stages that loop until game over. The ninja and ape/human enemies from the arcade game are left out.

Before you buy

Three regions exist: US, European and Japanese, and the European release also appears on a Sega Card. The Card version needs the card slot of the original Master System or the Mark III, which the Master System II lacks. The European cart costs somewhat less than the US one, loose and complete. The Japanese cart costs far more, and it is a different, smaller shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter. Loose, the US cart sits about the median for North American releases, and the look-alike risk is low.
