Atari Jaguar prices, all games & how to spot a fake

The game that sold CD-ROM to households, arriving two years late on the drive that couldn't be saved.

Atari clearly hoped Myst would do for the Jaguar CD what it did for PC CD-ROM — the demo disc bundled in every retail add-on package makes the intention explicit. By September 1995 Myst was two years old and available on nearly everything. A competent conversion; load times are the recurring complaint, and the 2× drive is why.

The Jaguar conversion's studio is not separately credited in the sources checked. Cyan is credited for the original version, but on this era's ports the Jaguar conversion was frequently done by a different team — see the per-platform credits below before attributing it. How the Atari Jaguar version differs

GamePro (April 1996) judged the Jaguar CD conversion an excellent job on the point-and-click original, but was explicit that there is nothing new in it — it is the same game as the PC and other adaptations.

A Myst demo was part of the free-software bundle Atari offered with the Jaguar CD add-on.

PC. The commercial giant of the era: more than 6.3 million units worldwide by 2000, over 4.3 million of them in the United States, and the bestselling PC game of the entire 1990s until The Sims passed it in 2002.

Buying a Jaguar CD title

Jaguar CDs are the most fragile discs of their generation, and the reason is structural rather than bad luck: Atari built a proprietary format on the audio-CD spec instead of standard CD-ROM. Capacity rose to roughly 790MB, but error correction fell.

Light scratches that a PlayStation disc shrugs off can make a Jaguar CD unreadable. Treat "light scratches, plays fine" with more scepticism here than on any other platform.
Only buy discs that have been test-played on real hardware — emulator testing proves nothing about a marginal disc.
Confirm the Memory Track cartridge is included or already owned: most Jaguar CD titles cannot save without it, and it is routinely missing from used listings.
Check the jewel case hinges and tray teeth. Replacement cases are common and are not a fault, but a swapped case often travels with swapped inserts.
