A launch-window beat 'em up with showpiece visuals, short and easy by the standards of the day.
Ninja Combat is a beat 'em up developed by Alpha Denshi and published by SNK. Two surviving members of the Shinobi family, Joe and Hayabusa, set out to stop the Shadow family and its leader Genyosai. It was one of the original arcade titles of 1990, and the home cart went on general sale in Japan in July 1991.
Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviewers liked the audiovisual presentation and the way each character fights in his own style, but marked it down for unlimited continues, short length, easy difficulty and repetitive play. Britain's ACE disagreed about the continues, arguing they were a design flaw in the first batch of AES consoles, but still found it short. Its verdict was that it delivers what the Neo Geo promised, an arcade game at home.
A Neo Geo CD edition appeared in 1994, and the arcade version is playable on modern systems through ACA NeoGeo.
How it was made
Developed by Alpha Denshi and published by SNK. Wikipedia credits Tsutomu Maruyama as producer.
Before you buy
A mid-to-upper priced cart for the early catalog. The US release from SNK of America sells for less than the Japanese cart in current listings. For a copy at the higher end, ask for board photos, since arcade boards in AES shells are the documented fraud: genuine AES boards read NEO-AEG. Complete copies shipped in a hard plastic case with artwork and manual.
