A charming turn-based Mario RPG that critics ranked among the N64's best, and one of its pricier carts.

Paper Mario is a role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo, released in Japan in August 2000, North America in February 2001 and PAL regions in October 2001. Mario sets out to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, who has lifted her castle into the sky and imprisoned the seven Star Spirits, and solves puzzles in the overworld with a series of partners. Battles are turn-based, and timed button presses called action commands change how well attacks land.

Next Generation's Chester Barber gave it five stars and called it the best RPG on the Nintendo 64, and IGN agreed it was the best RPG for the system. GameSpot named it the best N64 game of 2001, and Nintendo Power ranked it the 13th greatest N64 game of all time.

How it was made

Developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. Kenji Nakajima and Kaoru Kita are credited as programmers, Naohiko Aoyama as artist and Yuka Tsujiyoko as composer.

What the press said at the time

“The N64’s long RPG drought has come to an end in the best way possible. Paper Mario is simply awesome. The game’s combination of stylized, flat-as-paper characters and 3D worlds is really the perfect way to deliver the high-tech look RPG fans have grown accustomed to”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, March 2001

“Paper Mario is a first-rate title with no hint of a fault in the gameplay, and innovation enough to surprise wizened RPG fans.”

— N64 Magazine, April 2001

“Coming at a time when we'd all but forgotten the joy of a decent RPG with a genuinely involving combat system, Mario Story is a sweet-smelling breath of fresh air.”

— N64 Magazine, November 2000

Before you buy

Fake risk is medium, so ask for a photo of the board on a cart at this price; a cart that boots proves nothing. The US cartridge is one of the pricier carts in the library and also sits above the median for N64 games released in 2001. A complete copy costs a few times the loose price. PAL copies cost more than the US cart, and Japanese copies cost far less but are in Japanese.
