A big, generous collect-a-thon platformer and one of the Nintendo 64 games most worth owning on cartridge.
Banjo-Kazooie is a 1998 platformer from Rare, published by Nintendo, in which a bear and a bird travel through nine nonlinear worlds gathering items to rescue Banjo's kidnapped sister from the witch Gruntilda. It came out in North America in June 1998, in the PAL regions the following month and in Japan that December.
Rare started the project as a role-playing game for the Super Nintendo, then moved it to the N64 and rebuilt it as a platformer with a team of fifteen led by Gregg Mayles. The finished game sold more than three million copies.
What the press said at the time
| Next Generation Issue 43 | July 1998 | 4 out of 5 stars |
“Rare must be commended for taking the genre to a new level and delivering an impressive platformer that engulfs players in a Disney-esque cartoon world and makes simple exploration a joy. Two years ago Super Mario 64 set a new standard. Rare's Banjo-Kazooie just raised it.”
“Banjo-Kazooie outshines Mario only in terms of looks. It's still a brilliant, brilliant game, though — certainly the best of '98 until Ze/da comes to town.”
“While the gameplay engine feels "lifted" from Super Mario 64 (and the game may be dismissed by some as a mere clone), the technique and teamwork between the two characters quickly grow on you.”
“The music is as sickeningly sweet and catchy as in many of Nintendo’s more memorable titles. … Like Mario 64, Banjo’s gameplay is the best that can be had.”
Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."
Before you buy
This is a Med-tier cart for fakes: ask for a photo of the circuit board, which is the reliable test, because a cart that boots proves nothing. The US release sits above the library median on price. A Player's Choice copy sells for about the same loose as the original, while Not for Resale demo carts are far dearer and there is no published way to spot a fake one, so buy those graded or with a board photo. PAL copies cost much less than US ones and Japanese copies less still. The Rumble Pak is optional. Complete copies cost several times the loose price, and sealed copies cost many times more.
