The King of Fighters '98: The Slugfest, known in Japan as The King of Fighters '98: Dream Match Never Ends, is a 1998 fighting game developed and published by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade and home systems. It is the fifth game in The King of Fighters series and features most of the characters who appeared in the previous games, from The King of Fighters '94 to The King of Fighters '97. The game provides no storyline in contrast to the previous installments. Instead, The player selects a team of three characters to participate in The King of Fighters tournament until they reach the boss Rugal Bernstein, even though the character dies in The King of Fighters '95. Two fighting styles can be selected, and several characters have alternate versions to select with their classic moves from previous games.

The King of Fighters '98: The Slugfest, known in Japan as Dream Match Never Ends, is the fifth King of Fighters game and has no storyline. You pick a team of three characters from most of those who appeared in the games from '94 to '97 and fight to the boss Rugal Bernstein. SNK took players' opinions into account while making it, especially from Neo Geo Freak magazine.

The arcade version arrived in July 1998 and the Japanese AES cart in September 1998, with the Neo Geo CD in December 1998. Famitsu recorded first-week AES sales of over 22,651. The game went to more consoles than earlier installments, including PlayStation. The AES version was also added to the Wii Virtual Console in 2013.

Before you buy

Med risk, and a 1998 cart is worth checking: ask for photos of the board (NEO-AEG for a real AES board, NEO-MVS for arcade) before paying a collector's price. The US cart from SNK of America costs far more than the Japanese one when complete. A complete copy has the hard plastic case, artwork and manual. ACA NeoGeo covers the arcade version on modern systems, so the cart is a collector's purchase.
