A radio-controlled-car racer with a lot of ideas, held back on the N64 by its frame rate.

Re-Volt, from Acclaim Studios London, puts you in a radio-controlled car racing around a museum, a steamship, a construction site and a supermarket, with random weapons to knock rivals aside and cars and tracks unlocked through tournaments. The N64 version came out in North America in August 1999 and Europe in September 1999.

The N64 version drew mixed reviews. GameFan's October 1999 review said the frame rate drops badly and the four-player mode is hard to follow, yet called it a fun racer N64 owners should buy. Electronic Gaming Monthly later wrote that its issues with the N64 and PlayStation versions included choppy frame rates and uninspired visuals. GamePro's reviewers split on it.

How it was made

Developed by Acclaim Studios London and published by Acclaim, with Paul Phippen and Simon Harrison credited as designers.

“A disappointing racer, which is fast and exciting one minute, and frustrating and flawed the next.”

Before you buy

The price on this page is for the North American release, which sits below the middle of the 1999 releases. The PAL release costs a little less. Budget for a Controller Pak, which the game requires for saving; the Expansion Pak and Rumble Pak are optional. A complete copy costs several times a loose one. Fake risk is low.
