About The Flintstones

This is a platform game based on the famous Flintstones series. The game features many original Flintstones characters, such as Fred, Wilma, Barney, and others. Instead of the usual "save the princess" or "liberate the world" kinds of a plot, "The Flintstones" is mainly based on small quests: Fred has to retrieve a lost item, etc. The large levels are divided into smaller stages. In the end of each level there is a boss battle. The gameplay involves mostly jumping and hitting the enemies on the heads with a club. The health is measured by hearts. During the game Fred will find many useful items, including some that will increase his health level.

A solid Flintstones platformer for the Genesis, and one of the pricier US carts.

This is the Genesis version of The Flintstones, a platformer based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Taito published it in North America in April 1993 and in Japan in November 1993, and Sega published it in Europe in August 1993. Reviewers praised its varied levels and the number of moves Fred Flintstone can do.

What the press said at the time

Sega Zone75/100

“To my surprise, the Flintstones turned out to be a pretty fun game. Fred and the cast of Bedrock are drawn very well and the game is diverse and challenging.”

— Diehard GameFan, April 1993

“A little insubstantial but otherwise as good a Flintstones game as one could hope for.”

— Mega, July 1993

“Fred Flintstone has been kicking around for a a fair old time and now he stars in his own MD game! Fun graphics and gameplay in this platform adventure.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version never got a physical release. It was distributed digitally and exclusively through the Sega Channel in North America in 1996.

The full Genesis game was considered lost for years. A 2019 prototype had no sound and only two levels, and the complete version was later recovered by the Video Game History Foundation.

  • Super NES. Next Generation rated the SNES version three stars out of five, saying it looks good and plays well but could have used more innovation.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits well above the middle. The European cart usually costs far less than the US one, and there is also a Classic budget re-release in Europe. The Japanese cart usually costs a little less loose and about the same complete, and it has a different cartridge shape. It is valuable enough to check carefully: compare the board in a photo with the board listed on this page. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
