Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A charming 8-bit Mickey platformer that is one of the pricier Master System carts, and the European copy is much the cheaper way in.

This is the 8-bit Master System version of Sega's Castle of Illusion, released in North America and Europe in February 1991 and in Brazil in 1991. Mickey sets out to rescue Minnie from the witch Mizrabel. The 8-bit version was released for both the Master System and the Game Gear.

Console XS called it one of the best games on the Master System, praising its brilliant animation and sprite definition. In Brazil it was Tec Toy's best-selling Master System game. A sequel, Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, followed on the Master System in 1992.

Before you buy

The US and European carts are the two to compare. The European cart costs much less than the US one in both conditions, though the gap is smaller complete. The US cart is one of the pricier carts in the range, so the European cart is the sensible way to play it. The look-alike risk is low. Tec Toy also sold it in Brazil, but there is no price comparison for that release.

The Sega Genesis version

A polished Genesis platformer that still plays well, and a cart that costs much less in Europe and Japan than in the US.

This is the Genesis version of Castle of Illusion, made and published by Sega. Mickey must save Minnie from a witch in a castle full of hazards. The Japanese Mega Drive release came first, in November 1990, followed by North America in December 1990 and Europe in March 1991. The 8-bit Master System and Game Gear games of the same name are different games with their own levels and mechanics.

Period critics were warm about the Genesis game. MegaTech called it one of the best platform games on the Mega Drive, and Mean Machines praised its graphics and playability. A Genesis sequel, World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, followed in 1992.

“Every level features both charm and, in varying degrees, challenge. No detail has been spared — from the kitschy Disney-style music right down to Mickey’s tail-swishing antics. However, what's really tough to take (though it’s realistic) is the sound of little Mickey screaming when he falls into a hole or off a cliff. It doesn't matter if you're young or old; if you know Mickey Mouse, you'll find this carts a treat for all ages.”

— GamePro, February 1991

“ne of the best Megadrive platform games around, combining superlative graphics and exoettent gameplay to pro-vkJe an ackiidive and thoroughly en-iovabie challenge.”

— Mean Machines, May 1992

“One of the best Megadrive platform games around, combining superlative graphics and excellent game play to provide an addictive and thoroughly enjoy able challenge.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“A lovely platform epic very much in the style of (whisper it) Mario, except without all that tedious head-butting palaver.”

— Mega, July 1993

  • Game Gear. The 8-bit Game Gear version arrived in 1991, after the Genesis original.

Before you buy

Among US carts this one sits above the middle, so expect to pay more than for a typical Genesis game. The European cart and the Japanese cart both usually cost much less than the US one, and the Japanese cart has a different cartridge shape. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
