A good-looking Donald platformer that reached Europe in 1991, and an inexpensive cart.

The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck is a platform game developed and published by Sega, and the Master System release came out in Europe in 1991. Donald chases the Number One Dime stolen by Magica De Spell. It is also on the Game Gear, but the Master System version differs: the intro is different, bonus items come from defeating enemies, there is a timer, you can backtrack and Donald loses his hammer when he is hit.

In February 1992 it reached second place on Mean Machines' Master System chart in the United Kingdom, behind Sonic the Hedgehog. Another Donald game, Deep Duck Trouble, followed in December 1993.

“Donald Duck should wing its way into the top flock of Master System games. You'll spend days in this web-footed wonderland, but remember, Donald Duck is a tough old bird.”

— GamePro, November 1991

“Great graphics combined with superb playability make Donald Duck the greatest platform game yet seen on the Master System!”

— Mean Machines, January 1992

“Although The Lucky Dime Caper’s tough for a Disney game, it’s a lot of fun and many players welcome a chal¬ lenge. Great graphics, sound and game design have made it a classic.”

— Sega Master Force, September 1993

“Another Disney star gets his own Sega game, and once more it's a platform game. Luckily, Donald fol¬ lows the Disney trend all the way and his game is excellent. It's also hard enough to keep you going for a-a-ages, so prepare to spend thy dosh on this fab cart.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

How the Sega Master System version differs

Bonus items can only be obtained by defeating enemies, rather than being pre-placed in the level as on the Game Gear.

This version has a timer, which the Game Gear version lacks.

When Donald is hit by an enemy he loses his hammer, which can be picked up again as a bonus item after defeating an enemy.

  • Game Gear. On the Game Gear, collecting five stars gives additional points rather than limited invulnerability, and the platform layout and enemy positions differ.

Before you buy

The European cart is the one to look for. It costs less than the typical European-only cart, and the look-alike risk is low. A US buyer can use it, since the US console plays European carts. Check the manual is there if you want it complete.
