The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($10).

Also released on: Super Nintendo Entertainment System · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Sega Game Gear · Game Boy. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

A button-mashing Genesis wrestling game that is cheap in the US and Europe, with a Japanese cart that costs vastly more.

This is the Genesis version of WWF Raw, a wrestling game based on the television show. Sculptured Software developed it and Acclaim published it, in North America and Europe in November 1994. It follows WWF Royal Rumble and, unlike that game, supports a multitap. The Super NES and Genesis rosters are identical.

GamePro's reviewer found the controls more precise and the graphics more detailed on the Super NES than on the Genesis.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis and Super NES versions have identical rosters.

Famitsu scored the Mega Drive version 19 out of 40.

GamePro found the Super NES version's controls more precise and its graphics more detailed than the Genesis game's.

  • Game Gear. The Game Gear port has two exclusive wrestlers, Randy Savage and Crush, and the handheld versions run much slower.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the median. The European cart usually costs more than the US one, especially complete. The Japanese cart costs vastly more than either, many times the US price, and has a different cartridge shape from a Western console's slot. If a listing is priced like a Japanese cart, ask for a photo of the board and check the shell: a Japanese cart has a notch on the left and ridged edges. Sega Retro lists it as working with Sega's Team Player.

The Sega 32X version

A button-mashing wrestling game whose 32X upgrades were slight, at a middle-of-the-road price.

This is the 32X version of WWF Raw, developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim. It added a hidden wrestler, Kwang, who borrows other wrestlers' finishers, plus extra moves, outside weapons and alternating commentators and referees. It reached Europe in September 1995 and Japan on 1 September 1995, with a North American release the same year.

Critics found the changes small. Next Generation said the wrestler pictures are sharper and the sound better, but the graphics gain is minuscule, putting it level with the Super NES version, and Sega Magazine called it marginally better than the Mega Drive game. Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviewer found the play control sloppy and the computer hard to beat, and GamePro's Air Hendrix called it identical to the Genesis game apart from minor graphical improvements.

What the press said at the time

Next Generation Issue 8August 1995**
Game Players Vol. 8 No. 10October 199570%

“If you're a fan of the WWF and own a 32X, give this game a try. If not, don't worry about it. The play control is sloppy, and the computer is hard to beat unless you put the difficulty setting really low.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, August 1995

“Another Acclaim port-over to the 32X is sure to make 32X owners wonder why they needed that funky add-on at all.”

— Next Generation, August 1995

“Another game thaťs destined to be a faďs collector’s item. Leťs face it — who else is going to waste money on the WWF?”

— Sega Pro, August 1995

“As you’d expect, the 32X version is pretty much the same, with marginally improved graphics and slightly better sound, although the gameplay remains exactly the same.”

— Sega Magazine, September 1995

Before you buy

The US cart sits about at the middle among US 32X games, and the European copy usually costs somewhat more. Acclaim's 32X games shipped in sturdier plastic cases, so a complete copy should have one that is intact.
