About Yoshi's Story

Baby Bowser has taken the Super Happy Tree and cast a spell on Yoshi's world, turning it into the pages of a picture book. The only Yoshis not affected by the spell were six hatchlings that were still protected by their shells. It's up to them to reclaim the Super Happy Tree and restore happiness to the world. That is the only thing that can break Baby Bowser's Spell!

A pretty pop-up storybook platformer that reviewers found too easy, and a mid-priced first-party cart.

Yoshi's Story is a platformer developed and published by Nintendo, the second main Yoshi game after the Super NES title Yoshi's Island. Hideki Konno and Takashi Tezuka led it, with Shigeru Miyamoto supervising. Japan got it in December 1997, North America in March 1998 and PAL regions in May 1998.

The game takes place in a pop-up storybook, with pre-rendered 3D graphics showing worlds made of cardboard, fabrics, plastic and wood. Most challenges are tied to achieving a high score. Critics praised the art style, audio and graphics but reviewed it unfavorably for its low difficulty, and the response overall was mixed.

How it was made

Developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo. Katsuya Eguchi is credited as designer, Masaru Nii as programmer, Shigefumi Hino as artist, and Kazumi Totaka as composer, who also voiced Yoshi.

“Miyamoto has done it again, producing yet another 2D masterpiece that is both wonderfully original and completely intuitive.”

— GameFan, February 1998

“Anyone with a funky mind and super-sleuth skills will love this. Yoshi's Story is a totally fun-time, inventive adventure.”

— Computer + Video Games, March 1998

“the game does have a lot to offer children, it's easy to access, simple to play, and easy to play through. In fact, reasonable players will finish this on day one — and therein lies the problem.”

— Next Generation, May 1998

“Why is it that YS has NONE ot the feel, the depth, the pure simple enjoyment that a little old SNES game so easily provides? Tediously sniffing around is NOT my idea of depth”

— GameFan, May 1998

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style." Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Nintendo 64 version.

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

The international release was reworked after the Japanese version of December 1997 was judged too easy: difficulty was raised, graphics cleaned up, secrets added, and a save feature for Story Mode included.

Late in development the cartridge grew from 96 to 128 megabits.

Before you buy

Fake risk is low. Player's Choice copies sell for about the same as the original loose. A complete copy costs several times the loose price. PAL copies cost less than the US cart, and Japanese copies cost much less. The Rumble Pak is optional.
