Atari Jaguar prices, all games & how to spot a fake

Éric Chahi's 1991 landmark, finally on Jaguar — as a 2013 cartridge, and misrepresenting that is how disputes happen.

A Jaguar conversion of Another World (Out of This World in North America) was in progress in the 90s and never shipped. In 2013 it was finally released on cartridge as a limited, sanctioned collector's run with Retro-Gaming Connexion — a legitimate modern release of period-developed software, from the same studio lineage as the Jaguar's Flashback port.

Modern limited runs price differently from period rarities: supply is known and finite, so values run steadier — but franchise recognition brings buyers who don't know the platform's tells, and modern production methods make convincing fakes easier than 1994 mask-ROM carts ever were.

How it was made

The Removers developed the Atari Jaguar version, published by Retro-Gaming Connexion. Credited: designed by Éric Chahi; music by Jean-François Freitas.

How the Atari Jaguar version differs

Not a period release. Interplay planned a Jaguar port for September 1994 that never shipped; the cartridge that exists was confirmed and approved by Eric Chahi in 2012 and published by Retro-Gaming Connexion.

It is playable in both the original 16-colour mode and the 256-colour Deluxe 15th Anniversary mode — a toggle no period console version offered.

  • Amiga. The original, and a one-man project. Éric Chahi funded it with his royalties from Future Wars, which let him build it "without any constraint of any sort or any editorial pressure". In August 1989 he saw the Amiga version of Dragon's Lair and reasoned that vector outlines could achieve similar flat-colour animation in a fraction of the storage; he proved it with a polygon routine on an Atari ST, then found the same code ran at about 20 frames per second on the Amiga — the moment he knew the approach would work. He used the Amiga's genlock hardware to rotoscope polygon animation from video of himself performing the actions.
  • Atari ST. Where the polygon routine that made the whole game possible was first written and tested, on the Motorola 68000, before Chahi moved it to the Amiga.

These are the other versions’ scores, not this one’s. Ports of this era were frequently built by different studios, so they do not transfer.

Worth knowing

  • One man, his own programming language, and no HUD. Éric Chahi built it alone, improvising the content "layer by layer without knowing where it was going", and wrote his own animation sequencer to do it — a new language in GFA BASIC coupled to an engine in Devpac assembler, interpreted in real time. He removed the HUD and all dialogue deliberately, leaving only the world on screen during both play and cutscenes. He also developed strictly in chronological order, and has said the loneliness of the opening sections reflects his own mood working by himself. The influences are unusually well documented: Dune, Hyperion, the artists Michael Whelan, Frank Frazetta, Bernie Wrightson and Zdzisław Beksiński, and Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball — the thin motion lines and the charged power attack both come from it.

Before you buy

This is a 2013 cartridge, not a 90s one — a buyer expecting an unreleased period artifact who receives a modern production run will dispute it, and they'll be right. Say so plainly in any listing. Medium-to-high repro risk for exactly the reasons above; verify against Retro-Gaming Connexion's documented packaging.

Buying a Jaguar cartridge

Cartridges are the durable half of this library — the risk is provenance, not decay. The platform has an active post-commercial scene, so the question is usually which era a cartridge is from rather than whether it still works.

  • Ask for a photo of the label edge and the cartridge back. Reproductions are usually printed on adhesive photo stock and sit proud of the label recess.
  • Donor shells are the common trick: sanding marks on the back, or adhesive ghosting where an older label was lifted, are the strongest signals.
  • Cartridges are region-free on this platform, so a cheaper PAL copy plays on a North American console — a price difference is not evidence of a fake.
