Rare's inventive demolition puzzler, and one of the easiest N64 cartridges to justify picking up.

Blast Corps was Rare's first game for the Nintendo 64, published by Nintendo, and it reached Japan and North America in March 1997 with Europe following in December 1997 (the Japanese release is titled Blastdozer). You drive a series of vehicles to demolish buildings in the path of a runaway nuclear missile carrier, and across its 57 levels you solve puzzles by swapping vehicles to move objects and bridge gaps.

Critics liked its originality, variety and visuals. A Next Generation reviewer wrote that the sheer size of its levels and the number of secrets made it one of the few N64 games that justified its high price. Some critics faulted its controls and repetition.

How it was made

Developed by Rare with a team of four to seven people, many of them recent graduates. The designer was Martin Wakeley, the artist Ricky Berwick and the composer Graeme Norgate. The puzzle mechanics drew on Donkey Kong (1994).

“I really enjoyed Blast Corps. I admit a few of the vehicles are way too difficult to control (such as the Back Lash), and the gameplay is fraught with frustration, but overall, I got a real kick out of the whole mass destruction thing.”

— GameFan, April 1997

“Lifespan aside, Blast Corps ranks as easily one of the best N64 games so far. It encapsulates everything the N64 is supposed to be about: unprecedented graphics and sound, millions of secret bits and things to find, ceaseless inventiveness”

— N64 Magazine, May 1997

“once in a while a game comes along that restores your faith in games. Blast Corps is such a game.”

— Total 64, 1997

Before you buy

The price on this page is for the North American release, which sits right around the median for its group. The PAL release costs less, and the Japanese release costs a lot less. Sealed copies cost many times a loose cartridge, so buy a sealed one only if you want the packaging; a complete copy is the sensible middle. Fake risk is low.
