An arcade-racer port that is cheap today and mainly of interest to completists.

California Speed is the Nintendo 64 port, by Midway, of Atari Games' 1998 arcade racer. The cart came out only in North America, in March 1999. Atari Games and Midway are both credited as developers.

GameFan's April 1999 preview described it as another arcade-style racer coming to the N64 that year. Reviewing the N64 version, GamePro said fans of the arcade game would like the port but serious racing fans might want more replay depth.

A billboard in the Mojave Desert level carries a strange black-on-white message. Texture artist Morgan Godat later explained that the game was made under a serious time crunch and the billboard was a placeholder texture left in by accident.

“California Speed’s a gushing graphics feast that plays like you're taking a scenic tour through the Quaking State, but the handling trips on the line between sim and arcade.”

— GamePro, April 1999

“The sad thing about this port is that the arcade version is pretty fun. The N64 version, however, not only looks bad, but plays bad as well.”

— Game Informer, April 1999

“Not perhaps quite in the same league as Cruis'n USA but definitely well on the way to getting there. It's a boring N64 game derived from a boring arcade game”

— N64 Magazine, May 1999

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

The N64 cartridge supports both the Controller Pak and the Rumble Pak.

A period preview said the N64 version adds more tracks and cars than the arcade original, with each of the 14 tracks playable in reverse, mirror and reverse/mirror variants as well as normal.

Before you buy

Low fake risk, and the cart is cheap: it sits below the library median on price. The game saves to a Controller Pak, not the cartridge, so budget for one; the Rumble Pak is optional. A complete copy costs several times the loose price.
