The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($11).

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

A one-on-one fighter with cuddly animal fighters and a move-learning twist, a cheap curiosity rather than a classic.

This is the Genesis version of Brutal: Paws of Fury, an animal-fighter game from GameTek that began on the Sega CD and came out on the Genesis in 1994. Fighters can learn new attacks and save them with passwords. The Genesis version had to drop two characters from the Sega CD game, Pantha and Croc, and gives each fighter its own 16-color palette.

Reviewers split on it. Electronic Gaming Monthly liked the idea of learning special moves but felt it made the game less exciting, and every one of its reviewers found the controls weak. GamePro said the controls and speed of the Genesis and Super NES versions were much improved over the Sega CD original.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version had to drop the Pantha and Croc characters found in the Sega CD version.

On the Genesis, each character has its own 16-colour palette.

  • Amiga. The Amiga version is a straight port of the Genesis game that restored Pantha and Croc through new compression techniques, but uses a single palette for all characters.
  • 32X. An updated version, Brutal Unleashed: Above the Claw, came to the 32X and MS-DOS in 1995 with two new characters, new arenas, a remixed intro and new music.

Among US carts a loose copy sits below the middle, so there is little risk of overpaying. A loose European cart usually costs less than the US one, but a complete European copy usually costs noticeably more. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.

The Sega CD version

A good-looking animal fighter that plays too slowly, and the Sega CD disc keeps two fighters the Genesis version dropped.

This is the Sega CD version of Brutal: Paws of Fury, GameTek's fighter with anthropomorphic animals as the selectable fighters. It began as a Sega CD game, came out in Europe in September 1994 and in North America in November 1994, and fighters can pick up new attacks and keep them with passwords. Pantha and Croc are in this version but were cut from the Genesis one.

Reviewers liked the presentation more than the play. Electronic Gaming Monthly called the music and the cinemas among the best seen on the system and approved of learning special moves, but found the action sluggish. GamePro agreed that it plays too slowly and added that the backgrounds often block the view of the fight. A Game Informer reviewer in its September-October 1994 issue said much the same: it looks great and sounds great but plays slowly, and it may be the best fighter on the Sega CD without that saying much.

What the press said at the time

“All these will be looked at once then ignored. It's the atrocity masquerading as a game that will linger longest.”

— Mean Machines Sega, September 1994

“Brutal: Paws of Fury is a distinctly different game, loaded with loving detail, wry humour, and enough fur-flying fighting to make it the best original fighting game currently available on the Sega CD.”

— Electronic Games, September 1994

“First off, this has to be the best Sega CD fighter l've played. The belts and the learning of moves as you go are really cool, although many of the moves take too long to execute.”

— Game Informer, September/October 1994

“Brutal boasts one of the most impressive intro sequences that I have seen on the CD.”

— MegaTech, January 1995

Before you buy

The US disc sits below the middle among North American Sega CD games, and the European disc usually costs more, a little more loose and a good deal more complete. The European disc needs a European Mega-CD. Check that the printed label and catalogue number match the case; with a disc this cheap, a plain look at the data side is enough.
