A style-first Genesis brawler set inside a comic book, now one of the pricier US carts.

Comix Zone is a beat 'em up from Sega Technical Institute, published by Sega. You are comic artist Sketch Turner, pulled into the comic he is drawing by one of his creations, and you fight through six levels while the panels around you react. It came out in North America in July 1995, in Japan on 1 September 1995 and in Europe on 6 October 1995.

Computer and Video Games scored it 90 percent and called it a highly original scrolling beat 'em up. Game Players found it glitzy but its Final Fight style attacks a little stale, while still calling it worth a try.

How it was made

Artist DeZuniga drew the opening and ending sequences with ink and pencil and had them scanned and processed for the Genesis. The game was delayed more than once so the team could add features, which led to a release late in the console's life.

What the press said at the time

Game Informer Issue 28August 1995Overall: Andy 8.79, Paul 7.29 (Reiner's overall not legible); Andy 8.75, 8.25, 8.5, 8; Reiner 7, 7.25, 7.25, 8.75, 8; Paul 8, 5.5, 8, 8

“Truly, Comix Zone is an amazing game that is as inventive as it is entertaining.”

— Game Informer, August 1995

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Programmer Adrian Stephens had to fit the game into two megabytes while decompressing large pages of graphics during play, something the Genesis was not designed for.

Before you buy

Among US carts it is among the pricier ones, above most of the group, so check the cart carefully; a Western shell has no notch, and compare a board photo with the board listed on this page. The European loose cart usually costs somewhat less than the US one, but a complete European copy usually costs more. The Japanese cart usually costs far more and has a different shape. Sega Retro lists it as using the six-button pad.
