A competent four-player puzzle remake that came out late in the N64's life and still costs more than most of its library.

Dr. Mario 64 is Nintendo's enhanced remake of its 1990 NES and Game Boy puzzle game, released in North America on April 9, 2001. It uses characters from Wario Land 3, and Seiichi Tokunaga composed the soundtrack, mixing arrangements of classic Dr. Mario tunes with new pieces. It has story-mode cinemas between stages.

Electronic Gaming Monthly's June 2001 preview described it as a graphical facelift of the classic, arriving to prop up a thin spring for the N64. It was a runner-up for GameSpot's Best Nintendo 64 Game award for the year, which went to Paper Mario.

How it was made

Developed and published by Nintendo. Seiichi Tokunaga composed the soundtrack.

“played Pokémon Puzzle League to their wits' end will find Dr. Mario to be great CPR for their waning system.”

— GamePro, June 2001

“Even Dr. Mario 64, which is 90 percent rehashed material, virtually devoid of unlockables, and darn ugly in multiplayer, can awaken a gamer in denial. It’s $30 well-spent, whether you’ve played prior versions or not.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, July 2001

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

Reviewers noted up to four players can play at once in any of three competitive games, with a two-player versus mode as well.

The cartridge was first released in North America in 2001; PAL territories got the game only through Nintendo Classics in October 2021.
