About The New Tetris

There are several key differences in gameplay from the original Tetris. First, in addition to clearing lines, one can also form 4x4 large squares of four pieces to form blocks. When a block is created, it turns solid gold or silver, depending on the makeup of the block. Blocks can only be constructed from whole pieces: if any part of a piece has been cleared, then it cannot be used to form a block. When a line that has pieces from a block is cleared, it earns more points.

A handsome Tetris that shows off the N64's real-time scenery, for people who do not need a box.

The New Tetris was developed by H2O Entertainment and Blue Planet Software and published by Nintendo, released in North America in August 1999 and the PAL regions that October. Between rounds it shows real-time fly-bys of structures such as the Sphinx, the Pantheon, Saint Basil's Cathedral and a Mayan temple, rendered in real time at a level of quality that was relatively challenging for the N64's hardware. It supports up to four players and carries an electronic dance soundtrack by Neil Voss, who also scored Tetrisphere.

David Pridie is credited as programmer.

“At long last the N64 has the puzzle game it deserves. Don't miss out, even if you think you've already seen everything Tetris has to offer.”

— N64 Magazine, October 1999

Before you buy

The game saves on a battery inside the cartridge, so a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake. The US cartridge sits above the middle of the library, and a complete copy costs only a little more than a loose one. PAL copies cost less than US ones, loose and complete. The fake risk is low.
