Tetris with Disney characters in plain 2D: a fair puzzler that GamePro called a weekend rental for the merely curious.
Magical Tetris Challenge is a Disney-themed Tetris game based on Capcom's 1998 arcade game. It reached Japan in November 1998, North America in January 1999 and PAL regions in September 1999. GameFan's March 1999 news called it Capcom's first N64 title and said it was developed by Arika. It stays in 2D throughout.
Reception was mixed. Nintendo Power gave the Japanese N64 version a favorable review more than a month before the North American release, and GameSpot's review was mixed. GamePro said older Disney and Tetris fans would find it a blessing in disguise but that curious gamers would be satisfied with a quick weekend rental.
How it was made
Developed by Capcom and published by Capcom and Activision, as a port of Capcom's 1998 arcade game. Press at the time credited Arika with the development.

How the Nintendo 64 version differs
The N64 version is played as one of four Disney characters (Mickey, Minnie, Donald or Goofy), with Magical Tetris and Updown Tetris offered in Story Mode or Versus Multiplayer, plus an Endless mode.

- Game Boy Color. The Game Boy Color version is vastly different from the console versions: Quest Mode replaces Story Mode, and Pete is unlocked as a playable character through Quest Mode.
- Game Boy Color. Because of the handheld screen, you cannot see your opponent's board. A flashing laser on the left side of the screen shows how high their pieces are stacked.

Before you buy
The US cartridge sits above the library median loose, and the fake risk is low. A complete copy costs roughly three times the loose price. PAL copies cost less, and Japanese copies cost much less.
