  • Modern cartridge (reissue): A modern licensed cartridge that plays on an original N64, sold in standard and Collector's Edition versions; PriceCharting lists both separately from the original. It is not a fake, but it is not a 1998 original either: if a listing doesn't say which it is, ask.

A charming oddity: a platformer where you steer a glove and a bouncing ball, and a cheap one to own.

Glover is a 3D platformer developed by Interactive Studios and published by Hasbro Interactive, released in North America on November 16, 1998 and a little over a week later in the PAL regions. You control a magic glove who must juggle, dribble and throw a rubber ball that changes material depending on the environment, to restore the Crystal Kingdom.

Next Generation's December 1998 review called it one of the more intriguing platformers on the N64, hooked by its innovative control scheme, and its October preview called it a sleeper with a charming hero. GameFan, previewing it as Hasbro's first N64 title in August 1998, described it as a cute, Mario-esque 3D romp.

“with a unique control scheme, Glover manages to overcome technological flaws and give N64 platform fans a new twist on an old genre”

— Next Generation, December 1998

“It is a very commendable effort-that should fit snugly into (or over) the hand of any platform game fan.”

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

Nintendo handled distribution of the N64 version in Europe, as announced in September 1998. Reviews of the N64 and Windows versions were generally positive.

  • PlayStation. The PlayStation version drew negative reviews, in contrast to the N64 and Windows versions. It tells its story through animated FMV rather than a real-time cutscene.

Worth knowing

  • Glover 2. A sequel, Glover 2, was planned for the Nintendo 64 but cancelled.

Before you buy

The original 1998 cartridge is cheap, below the middle of the library, and the fake risk is low. PAL loose copies cost about the same as US ones, but a complete PAL copy costs less. A modern licensed cartridge from Limited Run Games (2022) also exists, so a buyer of an original should check which they are getting.
