A landmark Madden on the Genesis, the first with official NFL teams, and a cheap cart with a battery save.

This is the Genesis version of Madden NFL '94, built by High Score Productions for EA Sports. It was released in North America on 19 November 1993 and in Europe that month; Electronic Arts Victor released it in Japan on 18 February 1994 as NFL Pro Football '94. It is the first game in the Madden series with an official NFL team license, and Brian L. Schmidt composed the music.

A Super NES edition was made by a different studio, Visual Concepts, and is a separate game to this cartridge.

“A pretty good American Football game, but it's nowhere near on par with the Madden games of old. The King is dead.”

— MegaTech, November 1993

“If you're offense-minded and love great control, then kick off with the Genesis version.”

— GamePro, November 1993

“Every version of Madden has playability up the wazoo, and Madden '94 is no different. Eliminating pass interference from the game was a great move on EA's part and makes the passing game much more challenging.”

— VideoGames, December 1993

“In this version, over 50 NFL teams plus great teams from the past and John Madden's all-time great team are featured, but sadly the graphics and gameplay of JM '94 are inferior to those of the previous two versions.”

— MegaTech, March 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

As the first Madden game with an official NFL team license, it used authentic team logos and uniforms from the 1993-1994 season.

It had no NFL Players Association license, so players were identified only by number; the Genesis was the platform to get that license first, in Madden NFL '95.

Before you buy

Among US carts it is one of the cheaper ones, far below the middle. The European cart usually costs about the same as the US one. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with both Sega's Team Player and EA's 4 Way Play.
