About Madden Football 64

Madden Football 64 is a football video game. It was the first game of the Madden NFL series to be released for the Nintendo 64. The game has commentary by Pat Summerall and John Madden. This edition does not use real NFL team names or logos. Instead the teams use banners that consist of two bars with the team colors, and the team name on top of them in white, accompanied by players in their uniforms. The Pro Bowl is referred to as the "Madden Bowl", and the Super Bowl as the "EAS Championship".

Madden Football 64 on Wikipedia

Madden Football 64 is a football video game. It was the first game of the Madden NFL series to be released for the Nintendo 64, as well as the first Madden game to be fully in 3D. Essentially an upgrade of Madden NFL 98 designed around the particular capabilities of the Nintendo 64, it replaced the 2D players with 3D models but lacked the full NFL licensing which was customary for the Madden series. While this lack of licensing significantly hurt critical response to the game, reviews were mostly positive, with elements such as the detailed player models and realistic gameplay garnering praise. The game has commentary by Pat Summerall and John Madden.

A fast, arcade-leaning football game without real team names, and about as cheap as N64 cartridges get.

Madden Football 64 was the first Madden game on the Nintendo 64 and the first fully 3D Madden. Tiburon Entertainment built it as an upgrade of Madden NFL 98 designed around the N64, with 3D player models in place of 2D ones, and with commentary by Pat Summerall and John Madden. It came out in North America in October 1997 and in PAL regions in December 1997.

It does not use real NFL team names or logos, because Acclaim held exclusive rights to the NFL license for Nintendo 64 games for the rest of the 1997 season. One period review called it the fastest-playing football game on the system, better as an arcade game than as a serious football game. According to NPD figures through November 1997, it was the ninth best-selling video game in the United States.

GameSpot8.6/10
IGN7.8/10

“This is by all means one of the most solid N64 games to date. Too bad you have to buy an extra memory pak and an atlas to play it.”

— Game Informer, October 1997

“Despite its lack of merit as a serious football game, Madden 64 is the fastest-playing N64 football game around and as such is just slightly better than QBC 64 as an arcade game.”

— Next Generation, January 1998

“The players are all made up from 3D polygons and have very good animation, the graphics of the game at this stage would indicate that the Nintendo 64's capabilities are being pushed quite well ,with graphics looking smooth and detailed.”

— Total 64, 1997

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style." Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Nintendo 64 version.

Before you buy

The game saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge, so you need a Controller Pak to keep your progress. This is among the cheapest carts in the library loose, and complete copies cost several times that. PAL copies cost much more than the North American cart. Fake risk is low.
