About Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse
Mickey Mouse gets a chance to go down memory lane and walk through the timeless adventures he has lived. Mickey Mania is a platformer where all the levels are based on Mickey's most famous cartoons. The levels range about 75 years, starting off with "Steamboat Willie" and going all the way to "The Prince and the Pauper". The gameplay consists mostly of jumping and marble throwing at enemies, with an occasional puzzle element. The Sega Genesis version has an additional level not present in the Super NES version, released a month prior.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version
A handsome tour through classic Mickey cartoons that is too easy, but one of the nicer Disney platformers on the Genesis.
This is the Genesis version of Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse, developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Sony Imagesoft; Sega handled the Japanese release. Mickey moves through side-scrolling levels designed after classic Mickey Mouse cartoons. Europe got it on 28 October 1994, North America on 1 November 1994 and Japan on 31 March 1995. The Genesis cartridge lacks a hidden area near the end of the first level.
GamePro gave the Genesis game a mixed review: it applauded the visual style and the idea of playing inside old cartoons, saying the blend of past and present was magical, but found the game too easy.
What the press said at the time
“The result of all this hard work is a startlingly authentic emulation of Mickey’s cartoons on the video-game screen, with incredibly smooth and varied animation of all your favourite Disney characters.”
How the Sega Genesis version differs
On release, Famicom Tsushin scored the Genesis version 30 out of 40, two points above the Super NES version at 28 out of 40.

- Super NES. The Super NES version is missing the hidden Band Concert level, the staircase sequence in the Mad Doctor level, a few special effects, some of Pluto's appearances and some level-ending sequences, and adds loading screens between areas.
- PlayStation. The PlayStation version, released in Europe as Mickey's Wild Adventure, remakes all sprites, renders the staircase sequences in 3D and adds a Willie the Giant chase at the end of the Beanstalk level.
Before you buy
Among US carts it sits above the middle, and it is valuable enough to check carefully before you buy; compare the board with the board listed on this page. The European cart usually costs somewhat less than the US one in both conditions. The Japanese cart usually costs several times as much as the US cart and has a different cartridge shape.

The Sega CD version
The cartridge's tour through classic Mickey cartoons with more speech, a longer ending and a CD soundtrack.
This is the Sega CD version of Mickey Mania, made by Traveller's Tales for Sony Imagesoft. It came out in North America on 26 October 1994 and in Europe two days later. It extends the ending of the Mad Doctor level, adds a pencil-collecting sequence near the end of the Prince and the Pauper level and gives Mickey a good deal of dialogue. The soundtrack is on the disc, composed by Andy Blythe and Marten Joustra with additional music by Michael Giacchino.
Sega Pro called it another enhanced CD version of the cartridge that looks and plays remarkably similar, with improved music and extra speech, and still a great platform game. Electronic Gaming Monthly's ranked list of recent games said the Sega CD game's graphics and effects would blow you away and that its sound was great.
How it was made
Traveller's Tales developed the game, with Sony Imagesoft publishing. The Sega CD version's soundtrack is credited to Andy Blythe and Marten Joustra, with additional music by Michael Giacchino.
What the press said at the time
| Next Generation Premiere Issue | January 1995 | ★★★★ |
| Sega Pro Issue 41 | February 1995 | 85% |
“Still, criticisms aside, this really is a top platform release. Although it's not significantly different from the Megadrive version, CD owners will go wild over it”
“the CD-based soundtrack boasts a 26-piece orchestra that more than makes up for it. You’ll also find an extra couple of levels that wouldn’t fit in a 24MB cart.”
“Another ‘enhanced CD version of the cartridge’, this looks and plays remarkably similar, … with oniy improved music and extra speech. Still … a great platform game, though.”

Before you buy
The US disc is one of the pricier North American Sega CD games, well above the middle. The European disc usually costs noticeably less loose and about the same complete, and it suits a European Mega-CD. Check that the case and disc title match; the tall plastic case is fragile, so look at it in the photos.
