Madden's engine turned into a monster war, and a lively Genesis original that sits just above the middle.
Mutant League Football is a Genesis original that uses the John Madden Football '93 engine to turn football into something closer to war. Mutant Productions developed it for Electronic Arts, and it came out in North America in May 1993, in Europe in July 1993 and in Japan on 10 September 1993.
GameFan's Talko, reviewing it in May 1993, asked what you get when you cross John Madden Football with a classic B horror movie, and called the result one of the most unique and fun games of the year, and not an EA Sports title in the usual sense.
What the press said at the time
| Sega Pro Issue 36 | September 1994 | 70% |
| AllGame | 3.5/5 |
“This EA farce is great. Is it football or isn't it? Maybe not, but it's a fun one to play.”
“A great idea that is let down by the lack of depth that made the John Madden series a timeless classic. If you found John Madden too deep, then try this for more fun.”
Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Genesis version.

Before you buy
Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs less. The Japanese loose cart usually costs much more than the US one and a complete Japanese copy somewhat more; it is a different shape from Western carts.
