A winter-sports game in Konami's Track & Field mold, among the cheapest carts in the library.

Nagano Winter Olympics '98 is Konami's game of the 1998 Winter Olympics and part of its Track & Field and Hyper Sports line, known in Japan as Hyper Olympics in Nagano 64. It came out in Japan in December 1997, North America in January 1998 and PAL regions in February 1998, and a playable version appeared at the September 1997 Tokyo Game Show. The N64 and PlayStation versions came from different Konami divisions.

Critics who compared the two versions agreed the N64 one was better, with faster play, shorter loading and better graphics. GamePro gave it a positive recommendation, IGN's Peer Schneider praised the sound effects, and Electronic Gaming Monthly's Crispin Boyer blamed uninspired control setups for events that were neither fun nor exciting.

“Beautiful but cripplingly dull. Konami need to regain their sense of fun pronto.”

— N64 Magazine, February 1998

“It hurts me to say that, what should have been the glorious sequel to last year’s International Track & Field, resembles more of a sophomore slump, than anything else. Avoid this title.”

— GameFan, February 1998

“The overall appearance of Nagano Winter Olympics on the N64 is better than the PS-X, but that isn't saying much.”

— Game Informer, March 1998

Before you buy

Fake risk is low. The game saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge, so budget for one. PAL copies cost a little less loose and more complete, and Japanese copies cost much less than the US cart.
