A fast, thin racer against the clock on the Genesis, with a Japanese cart that costs far more than the Western ones.

OutRun 2019 is a racing game for the Genesis developed by Hertz and published by Sega and SIMS. It is a sequel to Out Run set in 2019, in which you race a rocket-boosted car against a time limit across four stages around the world. It came out in North America in March 1993, in Japan on 26 March 1993 and in Europe in April 1993. After it moved to the Genesis it was renamed Junker's High before Sega gave SIMS the use of the OutRun name.

Game Players, reviewing it for the Genesis, thought the car was fast but that this was the only challenge, since you race only the clock, and called the special features afterthoughts.

“Outrun 2019 is the best in the Outrun series on the Mega Drive, but it will never stand up against Super Monaco GP2 or Lotus.”

— Mega, April 1993

“OutRun 2019 attempts to give a good, popular racing game a sci-fi twist. Unfortunately, this Genesis cart ends up as a plain horse-and-buggy ride.”

— GamePro, April 1993

“Better than the likes of Super HQ and Turbo Out Run, but not by too much. Not very good, really.”

— Mega, July 1993

Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Genesis version.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs about the same loose and more when complete, while the Japanese cart usually costs several times as much as the US one, loose and complete. That price is high enough to be worth a closer look: a Japanese Mega Drive cart has a notch on the left and ridged edges, a flat Western-style shell with a notch is a repro sign, and for a pricey copy you should ask for a photo of the board. Japanese cartridges are a different shape from Western ones.
