An OutRun-series racer on the Genesis that costs more than most US carts, so inspect a listing before paying.

OutRunners is the Genesis version of Sega's 1993 arcade racer, the third game in the arcade OutRun series. Sega developed it. Sega released it in Japan on 13 May 1994, and Data East published it in North America in July 1994.

“The control in Outrunners is excellent, especially with the Quick Reactor. … As with all of the games in the Outrun series, the music is great”

— Diehard GameFan, July 1994

“OutRunners is a fun two-player racing game for a while, but I was soon beginning to yawn. A full screen option would háve bumped up the playability for me.”

— Sega Pro, July 1994

“Graphically it stinks with cardboard-looking sprites and backgrounds repeated every couple of seconds. Sound is the usual whining nonsense too. This is the worst Mega Drive game I've played in ages. Avoid.”

— Computer + Video Games, August 1994

“Very poor conversion of a decent arcade game that is just as shameful as the other OutRun games on the Mega Drive.‘Bad graphics, bad sound, no playability and generally not much fun. Avoid like the plague!”

— MegaTech, August 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis port forces a split screen in single-player modes, with one screen on the player and the other on the AI. The graphics are an adaptation of the arcade version, but other features, including the four original Out Run songs, were kept.

Gamefan said the absence of a full-screen mode hurts the game a little, but the graphics and music have never been this good.

The Genesis game offers an arcade mode and an original mode, in which you choose a car and win or lose cars against drivers from around the globe.

  • Arcade. In 1993 Sega demonstrated an online version of the arcade game that let up to eight players race across two cities in Japan, the first online arcade game demonstrated.
  • Atari Jaguar. The Genesis version was one of the first five games approved from the Atari-Sega cross-licensing deal to be converted for the Atari Jaguar, but that version was never released.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The Japanese cart usually costs a good deal more, especially loose, and it has a different cartridge shape. A Western Genesis cartridge has no notch in its shell, so a flat Western-style shell with a notch is a repro sign. Since it is worth checking carefully, ask for a photo of the board. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
