A reworked N64 Quake II with new levels and four-player play, not a straight port of the PC game.

This is the Nintendo 64 version of Quake II, ported by Raster Productions and published by Activision in North America in July 1999, with a PAL release the same year. It is not a straight copy of the PC game. The N64 version has different single-player levels and multiplayer maps, supports four players, and uses part of the first mission as a prologue. Aubrey Hodges composed its soundtrack, credited as Ken Razor Richmond.

The Expansion Pak is optional, and Nintendo listed the game among those it enhances. Electronic Gaming Monthly's March 1999 preview issue gave Quake II a place in its N64 previews.

How it was made

Ported to the Nintendo 64 by Raster Productions and published by Activision.

What the press said at the time

Game Informer Issue 75July 1999Game Hombre: Concept 7, Graphics 7.5, Sound 8, Playability 9, Entertainment 8.75
GamePro Issue 120July 1999Graphics 4.5, Sound 4.5, Control 5.0

“Taking into account the N64's hardware limitations (storage space, lack of RAM), Raster probably couldn't have done a better job.”

— GameFan, July 1999

“The garbled sound effects and voices don't measure up to the rest of the game. … Except for the sound, Quake II delivers for shooter fans.”

— Nintendo Power, July 1999

“Even though Quake II is a million years old now, it’s still a great game. Compared to the Turoks and GoldenEyes of the world, Quake II may not quite have the flash, but it certainly has all the gameplay you can handle.”

— Game Informer, July 1999

“but even without the gore, Quake II is certainly one of the best shooters on the N64.”

— GamePro, July 1999

Nintendo Power was Nintendo of America's own magazine, so its reviews are the console maker's view of its platform.

  • Nintendo Switch. The 2023 enhanced edition includes the original game, its two expansion packs, an episode built from the N64 version's levels and a new MachineGames episode.

Before you buy

The US cartridge sits above the library median loose, and the fake risk is low. A complete copy costs roughly double the loose price. PAL copies cost less than US ones. The Expansion Pak and Rumble Pak are both optional.
