A launch-era showcase whose rail-shooter style divided critics, and a modestly priced cart.

Space Harrier II is Sega's sequel to the arcade game, one of the original Mega Drive launch titles in Japan, where it came out on 29 October 1988, and one of the six Genesis launch titles in North America, in August 1989. Europe followed in September 1990. It features digitized voice recordings and music by Tokuhiko Uwabo. Because the Mega Drive could not scale sprites, the enemy, landscape and shadow sprites were pre-rendered at different sizes.

ACE magazine listed it in 1989 among the top three Mega Drive games then available, alongside Altered Beast and Thunder Force II. Sega Pro was far less kind in September 1994, citing poor sound, appalling collision detection and an awkward playing view.

“Space Harrier 2 is a significant advance on the existing Space Harrier games in graphic and sonic quality as well as overall presentation. ... The speed of the game is insanely fast (in keeping with the classic coirvop's style), the graphics and the way they are handled are all excellent, and the ferocity ol enemy attacks makes other versions look positively passive.”

— The Games Machine, June 1989

“Space Hanrier, this will obviously have great appeal, but for everyone else, the novelty will wear off very quickly.”

— MegaTech, January 1992

“Take off and battle aliens who've invaded 12 zones of the beautiful Fantasy Zone in this 3D shoot 'em up. The 3D is very fast and smooth, and indeed the whole game looks amazing. However, the gameplay gets pretty dull after a while due to the lack of vari ety. For fans of the coin-op only.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“It was a bit of a novel release at first but now just looks a bit sad.”

— Mega, July 1993

Before you buy

Among US carts this sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs much less than the US one. The Japanese cart costs about the same loose and a little less complete. A Japanese cartridge has a different shape and will not fit a Western console without an adapter or removing two plastic tabs in its slot.
