About Galaxy Force II

The peaceful and prosperous solar system Junos was located at the end of the Milky Way. Those who called its five planets home had no idea what was about to happen... Halcyon, ruler of the Fourth Empire, had Junos marked as its final target in the galactic massacre, and had sent the bulk of his attacking force in with a single purpose – the elimination of all life forms in the system, and the construction of a gigantic fortress on each of the five planets from which to rule the galaxy. Galaxy Force II is not a true sequel to the orginal game but a an enhanced version of the original. It was released roughly two months after the release of the first part thus making it obsolete.

A rail shooter conversion that critics found slow and weak, and a cheap cart among US carts.

This is the Genesis version of the Sega arcade rail shooter Galaxy Force II, developed by CRI and released in Japan on 13 September 1991, in North America in January 1992 and in Europe in 1992. It followed a CRI port for the FM Towns.

Reviews were harsh. Mean Machines called the Mega Drive conversion a lame effort, slow and boring, and said its graphics looked good only when you flew in a straight line. Mean Machines Sega later referred to it in passing as atrocious.

“If you were a fan of the arcade title, don't miss your chance to give Galaxy Force 2 a spin at home. As long as you don't try to directly compare the complexity of the graphics and pre¬ sentation, you'll probably find yourself enjoying the ride!”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, December 1991

“This game is not made to hold your attention with a lot of different action; it’s pretty much the same through and through. If shooting games or Sci-Fi are your thing, you'll find it entertaining.”

— Game Informer, January-February 1992

“A very disappointing conversion of Sega's showpiece coin-op. The 3D effect is poor, the difficulty setting is low and there are only four levels to challenge you. If you want a game of this sort, try Space Harrier II instead.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Painfully tedious and tacky conversion of the coin-op. ‘Into the screen’ 3D viewpoint as you shoot aliens wears thin very fast.”

— Mega, January 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis home version is based on Galaxy Force II rather than the original Galaxy Force.

Mean Machines called the Mega Drive conversion of the coin-op very disappointing, with a poor 3D effect and low difficulty.

A later Mean Machines review called Galaxy Force II atrocious.

  • Sega Master System. The Master System version is the one home version not based on Galaxy Force II.
  • Sega CD. Sega Force listed Galaxy Force II among the official CD titles announced for the Mega-CD.

Before you buy

Among US carts the loose cart sits below the middle. The European and Japanese carts usually cost about the same loose, while a complete Japanese copy usually costs more. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
