About Space Station Silicon Valley

A space station that was built more than 1000 years before by Earth, shortly after its launch, vanished. The station has since then mysteriously reappeared and it's bound on a collision course with Earth. Unless Dan and Evo can stop it, all will surely perish. The idea behind the game is fairly simplistic: players take on the role of Evo, a robotic microchip that possesses the unique ability to take over the bodies of dead (robotic) animals. Evo makes his way through a variety of levels and worlds filled with different objectives and, of course, different animals.

DMA Design's inventive animal-possessing platformer, which reviewers loved and which now sells well above the median.

Space Station Silicon Valley is a platform game from DMA Design, published by Take-Two Interactive, and it first appeared on the Nintendo 64, in North America on October 22, 1998 and in Europe the next month. Development began in September 1995 under a publishing deal with BMG Interactive. When that fell through, the team turned to the N64, whose hardware allowed more advanced environments and models, and Take-Two acquired the publishing rights after buying BMG Interactive in March 1998.

IGN called it maybe the most original game to hit the console, and Next Generation named it one of the very best the N64 has to offer, while also noting that it does not push the hardware and has occasional frame-rate slowdown. The team gave it distinctly British humor, and its lead programmer and an artist often showed colleagues other N64 games, such as Super Mario 64, to spot the differences. The N64 version has a glitch that stops the player from collecting the souvenir on the Fat Bear Mountain level, so the special bonus round cannot be reached normally.

How it was made

Developed by DMA Design and published by Take-Two Interactive. The levels were designed on Silicon Graphics computers and moved straight to the Nintendo 64 development boards.

What the press said at the time

“After an hour of play, the missions become immensely boring and the animals murderously annoying. SV has a unique charm that will only sit well with a select crowd.”

— Game Informer, December 1998

“There is no denying that Silicon Valley is a great game. It can get annoying wandering around for aeons without the slightest clue of what you have to do”

— Total 64, 1998

Before you buy

A loose US cart is well above the library median, so the fake risk is medium: ask the seller for a photo of the board, the reliable test, because a cart that boots proves nothing. The PAL release costs far less than the US one, loose and complete, which makes it the cheaper way to play. Complete US copies cost several times the loose price. The Rumble Pak is optional.
