Wizard Video's other horror cart, and the 2600 title with the best-documented authentication checklist.

VSS, a development company started by Ed Salvo and several other former Games by Apollo programmers, designed and programmed it, and Wizard Video Games released it in 1983. It is based on the film of the same name.

Like Halloween, its Wizard Video sibling, it turns up with improvised labels: some genuine copies carry the title in Sharpie or on tape.

What the press said at the time

Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 12October 19832 joysticks

“(not to mention the portrayal of rampaging psychopaths as video game heroes) disconcerting, this is not a game for you.”

— Electronic Fun with Computers & Games, October 1983

“I was disappointed- The movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre is very intense, but the game is life- less.”

— JoyStik, November 1983

“It makes a highly dubious subject for a videogame, especially in Atari 2600 format. The actual game isn't nearly as offensive as one might fear — it's actually a rather tame mazechase”

— Electronic Games, November 1983

Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.

Before you buy

High risk, but the checklist is good. RFGeneration's 2013 Wizard guide lists the tells: genuine labels are not glossy, so a glossy label is a repro; Hozer reproductions carry a logo in the label's bottom-right corner; genuine Wizard shells have grip areas near the end label and no internal dust flap, so a shell without grips is wrong; and the guide also flags double-ended carts. A hand-written or taped title does not by itself mean a fake, so judge the shell and board. If you play on an Atari 2600+, note that this cartridge was among the titles reported not to work on it at launch.
