About Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is a skateboarding sports game played from a third-person view across a set of urban environments. Players control professional or fictional skaters and chain together tricks such as grinds, grabs, flips, and lip tricks, using manuals to link combos into longer scoring runs. The career mode tasks players with completing level objectives and competitions to earn cash, which is used to unlock new levels and characters and to improve a skater's stats and equipment. It also includes free skate and single session modes, several competitive multiplayer games, and a level editor for building custom parks. It is the second entry in the Tony Hawk's series.

An N64 sequel that carries all the PlayStation version's features plus an extra level, and a late-era cart that sells for about the library median.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 reached the N64 in August 2001 in North America and October 2001 in Europe, after the PlayStation original, which dated from 2000. Edge of Reality, which made the N64 port of the first game, developed this version. Activision held the port back to give the first game's N64 release more time to sell, and the N64 version includes all the PlayStation version's features plus an additional level. Europe's copy is reported to have been the final N64 game released there.
A GamePro preview promised richer gameplay than the first game, with pros such as Chad Muska and Steve Caballero, a skater creator and courses in New York City and Venice Beach. The N64 version was reviewed positively but less warmly than the PlayStation and Dreamcast versions, with a truncated soundtrack among the minor criticisms. IGN's Fran Mirabella judged it the best version of the game the N64 could have had.
How it was made
The N64 port was developed by Edge of Reality and published by Activision.
What the press said at the time
| GamePro Volume 13 Number 9 | September 2001 | Graphics 2.5 / Sound 3.0 / Control 5.0 / Fun Factor 3.0 |
“Stellar port job or not, Tony Hawk 2 is still held back by the limitations of the N64 hardware. The visuals are extra blurry”
“Stellar port job or not, Tony Hawk 2 is still held back by the limitations of the N64 hardware. The visuals are extra blurry, and the backgrounds suffer from the same short draw distance as the PS1 original”
“Despite the allure of the Tony Hawk name, THPS2 offers nothing new for fans. It’s almost a year old, and the visual and sound features are poorer than their PlayStation and Dreamcast counterparts.”
“If all you have is an N64 for your pure gaming satisfaction, | both pity you and demand that you snag it. Tony is most definitely still the man, and this game is the still the bee's knees.”
How the Nintendo 64 version differs
Critics praised every version, but the N64 version drew minor criticism for its truncated soundtrack.

Before you buy
Low fake risk. The US cart sits about at the library median on loose price, and PAL copies cost slightly more. Budget for a Controller Pak: the game manual says progress saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge. A Rumble Pak is supported but optional. Complete copies cost a few times the loose price, and sealed copies cost a good deal more.
