A moody, tightly controlled Doom built for the N64 rather than ported from the PC original.

Doom 64 is not a port of the PC games. Midway Studios San Diego developed it under id Software's supervision, starting in 1994, on a customized version of the Doom engine with new kinds of level geometry, colored lighting and newly drawn sprites for the weapons and monsters. Deadlines and the limits of the cartridge's storage meant some content, including a few demons, was left out.

GamePro's April 1997 review praised its tight, responsive controls on the analog stick and its music and sound effects, which it put on a par with the visuals. GamePro and another critic also noted that it offered less freedom of exploration than Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. The cartridge came out in North America in April 1997, in Japan in August 1997 and in PAL regions in December 1997, and the game was later released for modern systems in 2020.

What the press said at the time

Next Generation Issue 29May 19973 out of 5 stars

“Heck, yeah! Doom 64 rocks like no other! … It may not look as impressive as Turok. but what it lacks in beauty, it more than makes up lor in action.”

— GameFan, March 1997

“If you're a Doom fan, this version delivers the goods and provides an intense Doom experience like none before.”

— GamePro, April 1997

“you're already a Doom lover you'll love it to bits. Though not as quick as it might have been, it does still capture that elusive Doom feel perfectly.”

— Total 64, April 1997

“In the end, Doom 64 is just Doom (although not Id’s Doom) with better graphics. While that may be good enough for some, to us it’s starting to show its age.”

— Next Generation, May 1997

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

Deadlines and the cartridge's storage limits led Midway to drop planned extra levels and a few demons.

There is no multiplayer mode; Midway said Nintendo did not provide the resources needed to program it.

GamePro found the controls tight and said the analog stick quickly becomes second nature.

The North American cart sits well above the library median loose and sells for many times that complete or sealed. PAL copies cost about the same loose but less complete, and Japanese copies cost less. Fake risk is low.
