A straightforward chess program with animated captures that does what it says.
Virtual Chess 64 is a chess game from Titus France, the third and final game in the Virtual Chess series, released in North America in June 1998 and Europe in July 1998. When a piece is captured, a short animated cutscene plays out, as in Battle Chess.
Next Generation found little to complain about because it does what it advertises, though it said the camera controls badly and hardcore chess players would likely pass. Hyper and N64 Magazine felt it was a worthy alternative to playing a real human.

“Overall, if you turn off all of the gimmicks, this is a pretty decent chess game. Nothing spectacular, though.”
“Basically, if you love chess then you'll be well up for Virtual Chess 64 but this sort of thing is hardly what your N64 was made for.”
Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style." Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Nintendo 64 version.

A mid-priced cart, about the library median loose. Complete US copies cost a few times a loose one. PAL copies are a separate release and cost less loose. Fake risk is low.
