A clay-animated fighter that period critics disliked, now a little above the library median on price.

ClayFighter 63⅓ is the third game in Interplay's ClayFighter series, developed and published by Interplay. The title parodies the 64 suffix on N64 games and refers to the film Naked Gun 33⅓. It reached North America in October 1997 and the PAL regions in November 1997.

Development began on the 3DO M2, then moved to the N64 after that hardware was cancelled. The game was known as ClayFighter Extreme in late 1996 before being retitled in early 1997. Reviewers were unkind: GamePro called out slow action, forced humor, muddy speech, frustrating combos and weak AI.

“in the end, the humor is about all the appeal there is. The gameplay is full of flaws, both minor and major.”

— Next Generation, December 1997

“For all its putty-like ambitions, Clayfighter 63 1/3 tastes like ashes in the mouth.”

— N64 Magazine, December 1997

“The fighting engine is really solid (believe it or not), and the tongue-in-cheek humor is quite funny”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, January 1998

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style." Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Nintendo 64 version.

Before you buy

Low fake risk. The US cart sits above the library median on price, and PAL copies cost less, loose and complete. A complete copy costs several times the loose price, and sealed copies cost more again, so buy complete unless you specifically want a sealed copy.
