About Conker's Bad Fur Day

Humorous action-platformer that does away with the tedious item collection found in most games in the genre. Instead, BFD employs a combination of standard jump, run and explore mechanics and context-sensitive gags and actions. For instance, in the beginning of the game, by pressing the B button on the first pad he encounters, Conker drinks some Alka-Seltzer to wipe out his hangover, at which point players can proceed forward. Later on these pads are used to activate a slingshot and throwing knives; to turn Conker into an anvil and drop downward; to shoot automatic, double-handed guns; to activate a The Matrix-inspired slow-motion effect and flip through the air shooting enemies; and much, much more.

Rare's profane, genre-bending platformer is the N64's cult favorite and still prices like one.

Conker's Bad Fur Day is a platform game developed by Rare, in which a hard-drinking red squirrel tries to get home to his girlfriend after a night at the pub. It was built for a mature audience, with violence, alcohol, profanity and toilet humor, and has a multiplayer mode for up to four players. It reached North America in March 2001 and Europe in April 2001.

Development ran four years, and the game started life as a child-friendly title called Twelve Tales: Conker 64 before it was reworked for adults. The voice track required a 64 MB cartridge, one of the few games on the system at that size.

How it was made

Chris Seavor is credited as designer, Don Murphy as artist and Robin Beanland as composer. One programmer spent four months rewriting Nintendo's Reality Coprocessor microcode to raise the number of simultaneous light sources to four, and another microcoded support for MP3 audio, reverb and Dolby Pro Logic surround.

What the press said at the time

GamePro Issue 152May 2001Graphics 5.0 / Sound 5.0 / Control 5.0 / Fun Factor 5.0

“Again, Rare show the rest of the world how to utilise the N64's power, but the camera lets the side down.”

— N64 Magazine, April 2001

“Yes, it has camera problems. And yes, sometimes you’re given little idea about what to do next. But even so, Conker is still one of the greatest games on the N64. No joke. In fact, I’m stunned exactly how good it is.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, May 2001

“It’s a rare thing indeed when concept, humor, and execution blend so seamlessly into a single game. Instead of merely settling for shock value, Rare has crafted something unique from its heap of vomit and viscera: an intelligently bizarre, insanely fun 3D-platformer extraordinaire.”

— GamePro, May 2001

Before you buy

The US cartridge is one of the pricier carts in the library, and complete and sealed copies climb well above that. PAL copies cost slightly more loose and about the same complete. The Rumble Pak is optional. With a cart this expensive, ask the seller for a photo of the board, which is the reliable test; a cart that boots proves nothing.
