A re-skinned hockey game wearing a Nagano Olympics license, and an unremarkable cart on price.
Olympic Hockey '98 is an ice hockey game for the Nintendo 64 carrying the license for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. It was the video game developer debut of Treyarch, and it reached North America in February 1998, Europe that April and Japan in July.
Underneath, it is a re-skin of Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98, without Gretzky's endorsement. Apart from the box art, the in-game titles and minor graphic changes such as team logos and colors, every aspect of the game is practically identical, which is the main thing to know before buying it.
How it was made
Developed by Treyarch Invention.
What the press said at the time
| Next Generation Issue 41 | May 1998 | 1 out of 5 stars |
“Imagine Midway took the tired Gretzky engine, added Olympic uniforms, replaced trading with "defections," and released it without tweaking anything but the default ring size. Well, you don't have to imagine because Midway did it. A waste of plastic and silicon.”
Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."
Before you buy
The North American cartridge sits about at the median price for the library, and the fake risk is low. PAL and Japanese copies are separate releases that cost much less, and the Japanese one especially so when complete. A complete North American copy is worth about three times the loose price.
